British Prime Minister Liz Truss announced her resignation on Thursday, making her tenure of 45 days the shortest in her country’s history.
She’ll officially step down as soon as her Conservative Party finds a replacement, a move expected as soon as next week, she said.
News of her exit seemed to calm financial markets, which had been reeling amid chaos in her cabinet — and brought some laughs on both sides of the pond.
Former White House Director of Communications Anthony Scaramucci tweeted that Truss had lasted “4.1 Scaramuccis.”
That was in reference to the 11 days it took him to get the boot from the Trump administration in 2017.

Former Brooklyn Nets player Kris Humphries found his name trending on Twitter, but not because of the four combined seasons he played in New Jersey, then Brooklyn. Rather, it was because internet sleuths noted his marriage to reality TV performer Kim Kardashian lasted 72 days. Her name also trended on Twitter Thursday.
“I’ve had pimples that lasted longer than Liz Truss as Prime Minister,” tweeted “The View” panelist Ana Navarro-Cárdenas.
Irish airline RyanAir apparently wanted Truss out of office and as far as away as possible. Their Twitter account posted a boarding pass to “anywhere” for the 47-year-old politician and offered priority boarding.
Truss became the third prime minister to resign in three years after making financial proposals, including drastic tax cuts, that were even unpopular in her own party.
“I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party,” she conceded Thursday.
Prior to Truss, British Prime Minister George Canning held the record for the shortest amount of time spent at 10 Downing St. He vacated the job after just 119 days. Canning had a good excuse — he died in office.
