A lesson from the COVID-19 pandemic is that prevention should focus on mitigating zoonotic-disease spillovers (N. M. Vora et al. Nature 605, 419–422; 2022). Such actions include environmental-protection measures that would dovetail with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). But those were set up in 2015, and make no mention of the risks of diseases that can be transmitted from animals to people. These need to be urgently incorporated into the global sustainability agenda.
