Man wanted for vandalizing UES synagogue, NYPD releases suspect’s photo

Police are searching for a vandal who defaced an Upper East Side synagogue in a potential hate crime — scrawling a demonic red eye symbol on the building’s steps.

The incident occurred June 13 around 12:03 a.m., cops said, adding synagogue workers discovered the graffiti and immediately checked CCTV camera footage.

The defacement at the synagogue near East 66th Street and Madison Avenue was captured on security cameras, showing a man drawing the evil eye symbol with a marker and fleeing on foot, police said. The suspect’s photographs were released Tuesday,.

The NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force is investigating the incident as a potential hate crime. Between Jan.1 and June 25, 2024, the NYPD recorded 200 confirmed hate crime incidents targeting Jewish people; there have been just 56 arrests.
