Mayor Adams cracks he wants to send buses of New Yorkers to campaign against Texas Gov. Abbott

Mayor Adams, frustrated by busloads of asylum seekers sent from Texas to New York in a political ploy, said with a smile on Tuesday that he was considering sending buses of New Yorkers to Texas to campaign against the state’s Republican governor.

Gov. Greg Abbott, the Republican, said Tuesday he would continue sending migrant-filled buses to New York City and Washington, D.C., until President Biden cracks down on immigration at America’s southwestern border.

Abbott is facing a November general election against Beto O’Rourke, the former Democratic congressman.

Adams, a Democrat, has pledged support for the arrivals, but has condemned Abbott, accusing him of creating a crisis and using the migrants as political pawns. And on Tuesday, he waded publicly — if perhaps jokingly — into Abbott’s reelection campaign.

“I already called all of my friends in Texas and told them how to cast their vote,” said Adams, asked at City Hall if he would campaign for O’Rourke. “I am deeply contemplating taking a busload of New Yorkers to go to Texas and do some good old-fashioned door knocking.”

“For the good of America, we have to get him out of office,” the mayor added.

It was not entirely clear how serious the mayor — who enjoys cracking jokes at news conferences — was in his campaign quip. But his irritation at Abbott has been crystal clear.

Officials in New York have reported the arrival of more than 4,000 asylum seekers, who appear to be adding some additional strain on the city’s housing crisis. Adams headed to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan early Sunday to greet fresh arrivals from Texas.

A spokesman for Abbott, Mark Miner, encouraged Adams to campaign for O’Rourke in the Lone Star State.

“We hope the Mayor of New York City will come to Texas and campaign for Beto O’ Rourke,” Miner said in a statement. “He should stop by the Border as well to see the real humanitarian crisis President Biden has created.”
