Mother, daughter found fatally stabbed in basement of Philadelphia home

Authorities are investigating after a mother and daughter were found fatally stabbed in the basement of a home in Philadelphia’s Crescentville section, police said.

Police were called to a residence on the 6000 block of Bingham Street on Tuesday afternoon, NBC Philadelphia reported. When they arrived on the scene around 1:30 p.m., officers discovered  a 75-year-old woman and her 58-year-old daughter, both with multiple stab wounds.

The women were pronounced dead on the scene shortly after 1:45 p.m., police said.

So far, no motive has been released, but police said they are treating the double slaying as a deadly domestic violence incident.

Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore said police responded to the residence after someone phoned 911, but they did not say who made the call. Vanore added that the door was locked when officers arrived and that a neighbor let them inside. There was no evidence of a break-in, he said.

Authorities identified the victims as a mother and daughter but did not release their names. Police said the home where they were found belonged to the 75-year-old victim, but they did not provide further details.

Jack Burkhardt, who lived across the street from the crime scene, remembered them as good neighbors, both of who were active in the church, ABC Philadelphia reported. He said the daughter would often stop by to visit and check in.

Another neighbor Marylee Rodriguez added that they lived in a quiet area and that many residents have been left shocked by the violence.

“You would think that this is a very safe environment so for two women to be dead, that breaks my heart honestly speaking,” she told NBC Philadelphia.

An investigation into the matter is ongoing.
