Rep. Jackie Walorski of Indiana is killed in car crash

Rep. Jackie Walorski, a 58-year-old Indiana Republican who served in Congress for almost a decade, died along with two of her staffers in a head-on car collision in northern Indiana on Wednesday afternoon.

The crash, which killed four and left no survivors, took place about 12:32 p.m. local time on State Route 19, said the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office.

Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), the minority leader, published a statement from Walorski’s office confirming her death. “Please keep her family in your thoughts and prayers,” said the statement, which McCarthy shared on Twitter.

The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office said the crash occurred when a northbound auto carrying only a driver drifted from its lane and collided with the southbound SUV carrying Walorski.

The driver of the northbound car, Edith Schmucker, 56, of Nappanee, Ind., was pronounced dead, the sheriff’s office said.

Walorski’s district director, Zachery Potts, 27, Mishawaka, Ind., and her communications director, Emma Thomson, 28, of Washington, D.C., were traveling in the SUV and also died, according to the sheriff’s office.

“My heart is heavy, and i don’t have the words,” tweeted Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) “But all I can say is prayers for her family. She was a good and honorable public servant.”
