The New Yorker Festival Returns in October, in Person and Online

A marquee lineup of writers, entertainers, scientists, chefs, and others will appear virtually and in person as part of the twenty-second annual New Yorker Festival, which returns this year from October 4th to 10th. In addition to the Festival’s signature mix of conversations and panels, this year’s event will feature an at-home dining experience, as well as film screenings and performances at Skyline Drive-In, an outdoor venue in Brooklyn. Most events will stream live and then be available for on-demand replay, allowing ticket holders to attend from anywhere in the world. Ticket sales for this year’s Festival begin on Tuesday, September 14th, at 12 P.M. E.T., when digital all-access passes, tickets for outdoor in-person events, and tickets for Dining In with The New Yorker become available. Tickets to individual virtual events can be purchased starting on Monday, September 20th, at 12 P.M. E.T.

This year’s sessions include:

  • The actor and writer Stanley Tucci in conversation with The New Yorker’s Helen Rosner.

  • The model and writer Emily Ratajkowski and the comedian and actor Amy Schumer in conversation with The New Yorker’s Michael Schulman.

  • Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Charlayne Hunter-Gault, and Jamaica Kincaid, contributors to the New Yorker anthology “The Matter of Black Lives,” discuss their groundbreaking work on race, in a conversation moderated by The New Yorker’s Jelani Cobb.

  • The primatologist and activist Jane Goodall will be interviewed by The New Yorker’s Andy Borowitz.

  • The writers Jonathan Franzen and Tara Westover in conversation with The New Yorker’s Henry Finder.

  • “Politics and the Novel,” a panel discussion about fiction inspired by fact, will feature the writers Yiyun Li, Valeria Luiselli, and Viet Thanh Nguyen, moderated by The New Yorker’s Parul Sehgal.

  • The writers Rachel Cusk and Patricia Lockwood in conversation with The New Yorker’s fiction editor, Deborah Treisman.

  • “Globalism’s Legacy,” a panel discussion about our collective future, will include the economist and Nobel laureate Esther Duflo, the physician and New Yorker writer Siddhartha Mukherjee, and the foreign-policy expert Anne-Marie Slaughter, moderated by The New Yorker’s Evan Osnos.

  • “Very Funny Ladies,” a panel discussion about the history of women cartoonists at The New Yorker, will feature Roz Chast, Liza Donnelly, Liana Finck, and Amy Hwang, in conversation with The New Yorker’s cartoon editor, Emma Allen. This is a free community event.

The Festival will also include screenings and concerts at the Skyline Drive-In, in Brooklyn, where attendees can walk, bike, or drive in:

  • The musician Dave Grohl speaks with The New Yorker’s Kelefa Sanneh and performs.

  • The singer-songwriter Aimee Mann talks with The New Yorker’s Atul Gawande and performs.

  • Stephen Karam will screen his début film, “The Humans,” an adaptation of his Tony-winning play, and then will speak with the stars of the movie, Beanie Feldstein, Jayne Houdyshell, and Richard Jenkins. The New Yorker’s Michael Schulman will moderate.

  • Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac, the stars of the new limited series “Scenes from a Marriage,” will join the show’s writer, director, and executive producer, Hagai Levi, for a conversation moderated by the therapist Esther Perel. Sponsored by HBO Max, this event is free.

  • Another free event, sponsored by the Nature Conservancy, will feature Katharine Hayhoe, the organization’s chief scientist, and Bill Ulfelder, its executive director in New York, speaking about how to speed action on the climate. Moderated by Allegra Kirkland, the politics editor at Teen Vogue.

The Festival will also feature a socially distanced twist on past excursions exploring New York City’s culinary culture:

  • Residents of the five boroughs can order curated meal deliveries from Dacha 46, Kimika, Reverence, and Yellow Rose, accompanied by on-demand access to interviews with the chefs, moderated by The New Yorker’s Helen Rosner.
