The Year in New Yorker Interactive Storytelling

Liminal hopefulness pervaded the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic. In April, Helen Rosner captured a moment of cautious optimism—along with an array of other emotions—when she conducted interviews with the newly vaccinated in New York City. Her subjects’ joy and relief, uncertainty and guilt, came through not only via written words but in their facial expressions and voices, recorded in a series of striking photographs and audio clips. The project was the work of The New Yorker’s editorial interactives team, which blends reporting and multimedia to expand on traditional storytelling. In 2021, our interactive stories took readers to the distant corners of the earth, from Hollywood to Libya. Here are some of the highlights.
