Biden calls for national unity, but not gun control, in wake of Buffalo massacre

President Biden on Sunday called for the country to come together in the wake of the racially motivated mass shooting in Buffalo, but shied away from advocating for stronger gun control.

“A lone gunman armed with weapons of war and a hate-filled soul shot and killed 10 innocent people in cold blood at a grocery store on Saturday afternoon,” the president said at the National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service in Washington. “[First Lady Jill Biden]l and I, like all of you, pray for the victims and their families and a devastated community.”

“We must all work together to address the hate that remains a stain on the soul of America,” he continued. “Hearts are heavy once again but our resolve must never, ever waver.”

He went on to call for increased funding for police — his latest rebuttal of the nationwide progressive effort to cut cop budgets — but made no mention of gun control.

Biden made the same omission in his statement on Saturday, the day of the attack. That shows how poor a chance Dems have of boosting gun control even as they control Congress, Politico noted.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) appeared to blame Senate Republicans for the impasse.

“It is a huge priority for us, and it has been a huge priority for Joe Biden,” she said of gun control on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

“But the fact is the 60-vote majority in the Senate is an obstacle to doing many, many good things, unfortunately,” she added.

In the evenly divided Senate, Democrats control the chamber through the tie-breaking vote of Vice President Kamala Harrais but don’t have enough seats to pass law without some Republican support.

Pelosi lamented the long series of mass shootings that’s devastated the country.

“We are not going away until the job is done,” she said. “We’ve said it over and over again to the families of Newtown, the Florida families, the Pulse families. It’s not just … these mass murders, which are horrible, they’re high-profile. It’s what happens every single night across the country.”
