President Biden will meet next week with King Charles, marking their first visit since the British monarch’s coronation in May, the White House announced Sunday.
The meeting will take place in London during Biden’s five-day trip to Europe from July 9 to July 13. Biden is also scheduled to meet with U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in London.
Those meetings will aim to “further strengthen the close relationship between our nations,” the White House said. Biden’s engagement with the king will happen July 10, according to Buckingham Palace.
After London, Biden is set to attend the 74th NATO Summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, before wrapping up the trip in Helsinki, Finland.
Biden, 80, did not go to Charles’ coronation two months ago. Instead, First Lady Jill Biden attended the May 6 affair in London.
Biden previously met with Queen Elizabeth at Windsor Castle in June 2021, less than six months after he began his presidency. The queen died last September at age 96, ending her record-setting 70-year monarchy. Biden attended her funeral.
Charles — the eldest of Elizabeth’s four children — has met with Biden several times before. He visited the White House in 2015, when he was a prince and Biden was the vice president.
This month’s travel marks the latest European trip for Biden this year. He met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in February during his first visit to Kyiv since Russia’s invasion, and then went to nearby Poland.
In April, Biden traveled to Belfast to commemorate the 25th anniversary of a peace deal. Sunak met the president at the airport during that visit. Sunak also visited the White House last month.
