We write on behalf of ourselves and 32 colleagues with expertise in forest carbon cycling, climate policy and carbon markets (see go.nature.com/4affx6v for a full list) with multiple, serious concerns about a statement released on 9 April by the trustees of the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi), which promotes best practice in setting emissions targets. It states that businesses should be allowed to use voluntary carbon market offsets to address indirect, or ‘scope 3’, emissions occurring throughout their supply chains — often their largest source of emissions.
