Country music star Mickey Guyton reveals baby son’s near-death experience

Country music star Mickey Guyton is opening up about her son’s harrowing near-death medical ordeal, which she says inspired her new song “Scary Love.”

The singer revealed that when 3-year-old Grayson was just a newborn, he lost consciousness and was admitted to the hospital amid the height of COVID — shortly after her trailblazing turn as co-host of the Academy of Country Music Awards.

“Back in 2021 after the CMAs that I did… literally that next day I got home, my son got really sick with a stomach bug, and I didn’t know what that entailed,” she told Jennifer Hudson during Friday’s episode of the latter’s eponymous daytime talk show.

“He got really, really, really dehydrated, and three ER visits later he had sepsis,” she continued. “I remember sending a picture of my son [to the doctor] because I could see, like, his eyes were sunken in his face … By the time we got to the hospital, he wasn’t conscious.”

The “Black Like Me” singer, who described the experience as “truly one of the scariest moments of my life and as a mother,” said that after a nurse honestly told her that the baby was the sickest person in the emergency room, she fell to her knees and began to pray.

In retrospect, the experience provided real-life insight into the unwavering bond a mother has for a child, she said.

“As a mother, going through something like that, I now realize why our mothers were so crazy over us,” she added. “I didn’t get it. I’m like, ‘Why are you so crazy, mom?’ And now I get it … and in that moment, I would have done anything to save his life. Without question, I would have taken his spot.”

“That’s what ‘Scary Love’ is about,” she told Hudson. “It’s truly about the love of a mother and her child.”

Guyton, 40, shares 3-year-old Grayson with her husband, attorney Grant Savoy, whom she married in 2017.

A lyric video for the song, featuring family footage of the family, was also released on Friday.
