George Santos dad wanted answers at bail hearing

The father of fact-challenged Rep. George Santos had a few questions for the judge while putting up his son’s $500,000 bond last month.

A newly unsealed transcript from a May 15 hearing shows dad Gercino dos Santos asking about travel restrictions facing the GOP congressman under terms of the pricey bond in his federal prosecution.

“What would happen to him if he gets caught traveling at areas that he’s not allowed to?” the father inquired — and was quickly informed there would be a warrant issued for his son’s arrest.

“So when he’s driving from Washington to New York, he’s allowed to (the path) of the states … and nothing else?” asked the elder Santos, who was told that was correct.

Rep. George Santos, R-N.Y., speaks to reporters outside after an effort to expel him from the House, at the Capitol in Washington, Wednesday, May 17, 2023.

Santos, 34, was exposed as a serial liar during his campaign for Congress, spinning tall tales about his education, his experience, his family history and his property ownership.

The dad and the defendant’s aunt Elma Preven put up no property or cash to assure Santos’ freedom to keep the politician free pending his prosecution for wire fraud, money laundering, theft of public funds and making false statements to Congress.

But the two were warned they would be on the hook for full $500,000 money if the Congressman violated the terms of his release.

“We understand that, yes,” said the elder Santos.

The politician had fought unsuccessfully to keep the names of his two relatives a secret.

Earlier in the hearing, the senior Santos was asked about the relationship between the politician and the family patriarch.

“It’s cordial,” he responded. “It’s not problematic at all. I mean, we’re not together all the time. But when we’re together, it’s like between father and son. A normal relationship.”

The father added the number of chats between the two had increased in recent weeks.

“Lately, yes,” he said. “But in the past, not as much.”
