Germany wins gold and silver in four-man bobsled.

Germany took gold and silver in the four-man bobsled event on Sunday, giving the country medals in all but one sliding event at the Winter Olympics.

Francesco Friedrich led a team to the gold with a time of 3 minutes 54.5 seconds. Another German team led by Johannes Lochner came in 37 seconds later, taking the silver. Canada won the bronze with a team piloted by Justin Kripps, finishing 79 seconds later.

The Germans were the heavy favorite for the event, having won almost every gold medal in sliding sports at these Games.

Germany swept the four luge events and then added two more golds in skeleton. The country also became the first nation to sweep a podium at the Beijing Olympics, winning all three medals in the two-man bobsled competition on Tuesday.

The only sliding event Germany didn’t win a medal in was the women’s monobob, a new event in which the United States won gold and silver.

The Jamaican team was eliminated before the four-man final heat, but the competition alone was a win for the Caribbean nation. Jamaica hadn’t sent a bobsled team to the Winter Olympics since 1998, 10 years after the country’s underdog team first won the hearts of fans and inspired the Disney film “Cool Runnings.”
