The perpetuation of India’s rigid caste system is another obstacle to egalitarian scientific endeavour (see, for example, M. Nobles et al. Nature 606, 225–227; 2022). Caste subordination is traditionally rooted in ‘impurity’ and in a social hierarchy of graded inequality and exclusion. It still thrives in many of India’s leading scientific institutions.
