When the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) ends in September 2024 (Nature https://doi.org/j3qs; 2023), major changes will be needed in scientific ocean drilling activities. Because the US National Science Foundation intended to develop an independent US-led programme, the European Consortium for Ocean Research Drilling (ECORD) and Japan are building a new programme that will be tailored to the changing international landscape.
