Marjorie Taylor Greene attacks Eric Swalwell with ‘Chinese spy’ affair rumor

Republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene insulted her Democratic counterpart Eric Swalwell with a nasty but nagging rumor on the House floor Wednesday.

The fireworks began when Swalwell (D-CA) said he was “disturbed” that right-wing representatives, including Greene (R-GA), want to weaken the FBI and DOJ, which became pointedly unpopular with MAGA supporters after feds searched the Florida home of former President Donald Trump to recover classified documents in August. Swalwell used a visual aid featuring Greene to illustrate his point.

“That was quite entertaining from someone that had a sexual relationship with a Chinese spy,” Greene replied during a Homeland Security Committee hearing. “Everyone knows it.”

Greene was referring to the California congressman’s ties to Chinese national and alleged spy Christine Fang, also known as Fang Fang, who worked to develop close relationships with U.S. politicians including Swalwell, according to a 2020 Axios report. She was also said to have been active in fundraising for the liberal politician’s 2014 congressional campaign.

Swalwell’s office said in 2020 the congressman hadn’t seen Fang in nearly six years and declined to participate in Axios’ report. The 42-year-old representative said he has cooperated with officials who’ve inquired about Fang and denies any wrongdoing. He tweeted about his children on Wednesday before brushing off Greene’s charge.

“Dealing with this crazy lady’s delusions is like dunking in Oz,” he said.

Democrats moved to have Greene’s comment about her colleague struck from the record Wednesday. After deliberating for several minutes, committee chairman Mark Green (R-Tenn.) declined that request. But Greene was silenced later in the hearing when she called Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas “a liar” during a disagreement. That insult was removed from the hearing’s official transcript.

Greene is a notoriously disruptive presence in the political arena. She and Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert openly heckled President Joe Biden during his 2022 State of the Union Address. Both conspiracy buffs claim to believe the 2020 presidential election was somehow rigged.
