Mayor Adams claims ‘woke’ Democrats are driving minority voters out of party

Mayor Adams accused “woke” Democrats on Wednesday of driving minority voters out of the party — embracing a talking point typically pushed by Republicans.

“There’s a hemorrhaging of our Latino community, our AAPI communities, that’s leaving the traditional Democratic base, because we’ve allowed the loudest and those who consider themselves to be ‘woke,’” Adams said in an appearance on MSNBC.

“Some of us never went to sleep, and we hear and speak directly to people, and I think the party is now understanding that we have to speak at those issues that are important: Jobs, public safety, educating our children, good health care, just these common kitchen table issues.”

Adams delivered the broadside against some of his fellow Democrats while opining on President Joe Biden’s Tuesday night State of the Union address before Congress.

The moderate mayor made the case that Biden did a good job in his speech of moving away from “woke” rhetoric in favor of focusing on meat-and-potatoes political issues.

But the mayor, who was a registered Republican between 1997 and 2001, did not elaborate on what he meant by “woke” or which specific Democrats he believes are to blame for advancing that message. A mayoral spokesman did not immediately respond to emailed follow-up questions.

“Woke” emerged out of the Black Lives Matter movement in the mid-2010s as a term urging people to be on alert in their everyday lives for police brutality and systemic racism.

However, since then, the term has mostly morphed into a taunt used by conservatives to ridicule liberals who they believe are overly focused on using inclusive and “politically correct” language.

Notably, Republican Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders also railed against “woke” Democrats in her party’s Tuesday night rebuttal to Biden’s State of the Union.

“The Biden administration seems more interested in woke fantasies than the hard reality Americans face every day,” Sanders said in her nationally televised remarks.

Like Adams, Sanders did not elaborate on what “woke” means to her.
