Mayor Adams meeting with Biden officials days after saying president has ‘failed’ NYC over migrant crisis

Mayor Adams — who blasted President Biden earlier this week for being MIA on New York City’s migrant crisis — is visiting the nation’s capital Friday to sit down with top members of the commander-in-chief’s administration.

The primary purpose of Adams’ trip to Washington, D.C. is participating in the African-American Mayors Association’s annual conference, at which he will deliver remarks on a morning panel.

Given that he’s in town, Adams also opted to schedule a string of closed-door meetings with Biden administration officials, mayoral spokesman Fabien Levy said.

Ahead of his conference appearance, Adams kicked off the day by holding a meet with Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

Later in the day, Adams is set to hold back-to-back meetings with Drug Enforcement Administration Administrator Anne Milgram, Department of Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Deanne Criswell, according to his public schedule.

Adams also has a sit-down penciled in on his schedule with unnamed “White House officials.”

Levy declined to name the White House officials, but said the president is not among them.

The focus of the meetings with Biden’s senior aides will be the city’s growing migrant crisis, according to Levy.

“They’re going to be talking about asylum seekers,” Levy said, adding that among the items on the agenda is the mayor’s push for the feds to expedite work authorization for newly-arrived migrants.

The Washington rendezvous comes after Adams on Wednesday charged that Biden has “failed New York City” by not providing more federal assistance for sheltering and providing services for the tens of thousands of mostly Latin American asylum seekers who have arrived in the five boroughs since last spring.

“The national government has turned its back on New York City,” the Democratic mayor said at City Hall. “This is in the lap of the president of the United States.”

The Biden broadside marked the most pointed criticism Adams has lobbied to date against the Democratic president over the migrant matter. It also comes just a month after Biden tapped Adams to be among a group of official surrogates for his 2024 reelection campaign.

To date, the feds have only forked over about $8 million in migrant-related aid to New York City — a drop in the bucket as compared to the $1.4 billion that Adams administration projects it will spend on the crisis by July 1.

Adams’ administration submitted an application with FEMA late last month, though, seeking some $650 million in aid. FEMA expects to decide by May 31 how much relief will be allocated for New York City.
