Department of Social Services Commissioner Gary Jenkins is resigning from his post — months after coming under investigation over an alleged coverup of the Adams administration’s right-to-shelter violations — three sources familiar with the matter told the Daily News on Tuesday.
Jenkins, who was appointed by Adams in January 2022, informed his senior staff of his resignation in a private meeting Tuesday afternoon, the sources said. He plans to publicly announce it in a Tuesday evening appearance on NY1, they added.
Spokespersons for Adams and Jenkins did not immediately return a request for comment.
The Department of Investigation launched a probe into Jenkins last summer after Julia Savel, his former top spokeswoman, accused him of seeking to withhold information from the public about the Adams administration’s failure to find housing for a group of Latin-American migrants within a timeframe stipulated by the city’s right-to-shelter law.
According to a source briefed on the matter, the Department of Investigation is soon expected to make the findings of that probe public.
