Philadelphia shooting: 1 man dead, 2 wounded, including 9-year-old

A man was fatally shot and another two people wounded — including a young girl — during a shooting in Philadelphia, police said.

The man was found dead inside a bullet-riddled car on the 2800 block of Passyunk Avenue on Thursday around 8:50 p.m. He was shot once in the head and again in the neck. His Chevy Malibu had been struck at least 10 times on the passenger side, CBS News reported.

He was pronounced dead on the scene, Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said. He was 23 years old, but his name has not yet been released.

A 9-year-old girl was also inside the vehicle at the time, but she managed to flee, according to Small. Eventually, she crossed paths with a good Samaritan, who brought her to a nearby police station. From there, she was transported to Children’s Hospital and treated for a graze wound, ABC Philadelphia reported. She was listed in stable condition as of early Friday morning.

Per the preliminary investigation, the girl is related to the 23-year-old shooting victim, Small said.

A 46-year-old man was also shot in the back and transported to Presbyterian Hospital in critical condition around the same time, Small said. He was found inside a different vehicle, an Acura, in a parking lot near the 6100 block of West Passyunk Avenue. Authorities found 26 spent shell casings on the nearby Passyunk Avenue Bridge, which crosses the Schuylkill River, so they believe that is where the shooting happened, Small said.

The 23-year-old victim was either able to drive a short distance after he was shot or his vehicle drifted across the bridge before coming to a stop against a median, police said.

A motive for the deadly gunfire remained unclear Friday morning and no suspects have been arrested. Small noted that there are police cameras in the area as well as cameras on some businesses that authorities hope will help with the investigation.
