Rep. George Santos could face expulsion vote in House under Democratic procedural move

Rep. George Santos could face a vote to expel him from Congress this week after Democrats launched a procedural push Tuesday to force the measure to the floor of the House of Representatives.

Congressional leaders have until Thursday to vote on the proposed measure to oust Santos, who was indicted last week on 13 federal criminal counts.

Rep. George Santos waits for the start of a session in the House chamber in Washington on Jan. 6, 2023.

The votes will put Republicans on the hot seat, even if it’s still unlikely Santos will be expelled.

Their first vote will be on whether to table the resolution, which will require a majority vote — and given Republicans’ slim majority in the House, it’s not clear enough votes to table exist.

If the motion to table fails, a full House vote will be held on Santos’ expulsion. If that happens, it would take a two-thirds majority vote to expel him from Congress.

Several Republicans from the New York delegation have repeatedly called on their colleague Santos to resign — but they’ve mostly stopped short of calling for his expulsion.

GOP leaders like House Speaker Kevin McCarthy of California don’t want to lose Santos’ vote in the nearly evenly divided body.

The expulsion resolution was introduced by Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) and has wide Democratic support.

Santos has admitted lying about most of his life story. But he pleaded not guilty to the charges of lying about his finances and fraudulently getting COVID-19 unemployment benefits.

He vows to fight to stay in Congress and even wants to run for reelection.

The political newcomer won an upset victory in a Democratic-leaning district on Long Island’s North Shore and a slice of Queens in the midterms.

Democrats are using him as a poster boy for a $45 million campaign to take back up to six seats that the GOP won in New York alone and retake the entire House in 2024.
