Rep. Jerrold Nadler pulls away from rival Rep. Carolyn Maloney with 43% support in NY-12 Democratic primary: poll

Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) is pulling away from Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) in their Manhattan primary cage fight as Election Day nears, a new poll revealed on Thursday.

The powerful upper West Side Democrat scored 43% of those surveyed compared to just 24% for Maloney, whose base is on the East Side.

Suraj Patel, an insurgent who mounted two unsuccessful challenges to Maloney, was picked by 14% of the Democratic voters in the poll carried out by WPIX television.

The picture looks even better when the 19% of voters who are still undecided just days before the Tuesday election were asked to declare their preferences.

Nadler, who leads the House Judiciary Committee, won 51% of undecided voters compared to Maloney at 29%.

The two veteran leaders were locked in a much closer race in earlier polls of their incumbent-vs.-incumbent matchup.

According to PIX 11, the poll provided some clues as to Maloney’s missteps—her support, or perceived lack thereof, for President Biden. When asked during a debate if she would support a second term, she responded, “I don’t believe he’s running for reelection,” quickly followed by an apology tour.

The latest numbers reflect that 29% of Democrats in NY-12 would oppose a candidate who opposes Biden being the Democratic nominee in 2024.
