Republicans push back against Biden prime-time speech on democracy in danger

Republicans hit back hard at President Biden’s prime-time speech on Thursday evening in which he derided the MAGA movement as a danger to American democracy.

House Minority Leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) trashed Biden for dividing Americans and demeaning former President Donald Trump’s millions of supporters as “semi-fascist.”

“President Biden has chosen to divide, demean, and disparage his fellow Americans,” McCarthy said in a speech before Biden’s. “That is not leadership.

“When the President speaks tonight at Independence Hall, the first lines out of his mouth should be to apologize for slandering tens of millions of Americans as ‘fascists,’” McCarthy added.

Biden’s speech came as Trump rallies his Republican backers to make a comeback run for the White House in 2024.

Even though Biden went to great pains to assert he was not attacking all Republicans, GOP leaders weren’t buying it.

“With all due respect, Mr. President, there’s nothing wrong with America’s soul,” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), tweeted. “The American people are hurting because of your policies.”

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) called the speech an effort to distract voters from his failures, even though Democrats have recently been on a political roll.

“Joe Biden vilified millions of Americans in a divisive & angry speech that was detached from the reality of his political failures,” Cruz said.

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.), one of the staunchest Trump supporters in Congress, accused Biden of calling his opponents names.

“Biden says, ‘We The People,’” she tweeted, ” but if you don’t agree with him, you’re labeled an extremist.”
