Scandinavian Mystery Shows That I Would Watch

“The Hygge Murders”

A Danish detective searches for a missing American woman in the secluded town of Cozyligg. Locals claim that the young woman relocated here to experience the hygge life style and was last seen leaving a store with an armful of tapered candles. When the detective finally tracks the woman down, in her home, suffocating under a pile of sheepskin blankets, he must ask himself: How far is someone willing to go to pretend that they like winter?

“Serial Killers and Stunning Drone Shots”

In this Nordic noir, a hard-boiled detective pursues a notorious serial killer. A big part of that pursuit involves standing atop craggy cliffs and looking down at the magnificent fjords. Occasionally, he will stop to examine a bloated corpse that has washed onto the shore, but mostly he just gazes out at the dramatic landscape for an episode or two. The finale will leave viewers on the edge of their seats as they desperately search for cheap flights to Norway.

“The Detective in the Chunky Knit Sweater”

Helga Herring is a rugged, no-nonsense detective who always wears a cute wool sweater. Her rookie partner is a single dad with perpetually chapped lips who also wears a cute wool sweater. Together, they uncover a web of corruption in their small town and must identify the government officials who are selling cute wool sweaters on the black market to Scandi-obsessed Americans.

“The IKEA Murders”

Detective Lars Smörgåsbord is called upon to investigate the mysterious deaths of young newlyweds who perished while trying to set up an IKEA bookshelf. Each episode slowly reveals the harrowing journey that led to the couple’s untimely demise. Expect bleak and gritty scenes of the couple bitterly arguing about missing screws and how one shelf looks shorter than the other and why they can’t afford to buy preassembled furniture at their age. By the end of the series, the detective will realize that the real killer is the minimalist design trend.

“Everyone You Know Is in Iceland Right Now”

In this techno thriller, the lead detective must answer a puzzling question: Are all my Instagram friends in Iceland right now? This then leads to a follow-up investigation: Is a geothermal pool a relaxing experience, or are you just shivering the entire time?

“Hamlet”

This Scandi-noir version of the Shakespearean drama will satisfy those viewers whose problem with the original play was that it didn’t have any drone shots. The series incited some controversy, however, for casting Kenneth Branagh as Hamlet, making him the only Danish character who speaks English with a British accent.

“The Female Prime Minister Who Hunts Down Serial Killers”

Fans of “Borgen” will love this new series about a female Prime Minister who juggles work-life demands while also hunting down a psychopathic killer in her free time. In the season finale, viewers will be shocked to discover that the Prime Minister is able to do it all, thanks to her country’s generous paid-vacation-day policy.

“The Stoic Detective”

A stoic detective must learn to display some emotion when he finds out that the government will take care of his exorbitant medical bills. Although a hit in Europe, this program has yet to air in the U.S. ♦
