According to the Global Carbon Budget 2022 published last month, emissions from fossil fuels and industry have continued to rise since 2021 and have now hit record levels (P. Friedlingstein et al. Earth Syst. Sci. Data 14, 4811–4900; 2022). The study makes clear that urgent cuts in carbon emissions are required if we are to limit the global temperature increase to 1.5 °C, the target of the 2015 Paris climate agreement.
