The prosecution says there is no “mistake defense” in this case

Assistant attorney general Erin Eldridge said that Kim Potter put “four people in harm’s way” when she shot Daunte Wright — the victim, his girlfriend, and two fellow officers on the scene.

The prosecutor played body-worn camera footage from Potter and Sergeant Mychal Johnson during her closing statement. The video footage, which was shown to the jury as evidence during trial testimony, shows the moment that Potter shot Wright.

During her argument, Eldridge focused on the risk to the other people who were present during the shooting. While the footage played, she pointed out to the jury how Officer Anthony Luckey, the trainee that Potter was supervising during the traffic stop, was close enough to Potter’s gun that he took a bullet casing to the face when she pulled the trigger.

The prosecutor also played footage from Sergeant Johnson, who was on the passenger side of the car reaching in and holding the shifter to prevent Wright from driving away during the incident. Eldridge said that Johnson was also in the “line of fire” when Potter fired her weapon.

“The defendant didn’t save Johnson’s life,” Eldridge said, a reference to the defense’s position that Potter’s use of force was necessary to prevent Wright from driving away while the sergeant was reaching into his car. If anything, Eldridge argued, Daunte Wright saved the other individuals’ lives when he “took a bullet to the chest.”

The prosecution’s closing argument is ongoing.
