Michael Park and colleagues report an intriguing decline over six decades in ‘disruptive’ papers and patents that have moved science and technology in new directions (see Nature 613, 138–144 (2023); Nature 613, 225; 2023). This finding is disappointing. With pandemic threats, catastrophic environmental changes and health challenges, we need all the good scientific ideas that we can generate.
