Wordle 688 3/6

🟨⬜🟨🟨⬜ WHALE
🟩⬜🟩🟩🟩 ALLOW
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 AGLOW️

I am in some ways a creature of habit. I start my days with coffee and the crossword. I listen to songs on repeat. Try, I dare you, to stop me from enjoying a few frozen cherries dropped into a cup of plain yogurt before I go to bed.

When it comes to Wordle, though, I resist the prescriptive approach of settling on a routine opening word, be it ADIEU or RAISE or CRANE. Instead, I prefer to pluck a word from the ether that somehow relates to my day: something I’ve thought about, encountered or read. That way, each game is pinned to a particular moment in time and unfolds in its own unique way — even if it means that I occasionally employ a whale of an unstrategic opener.

Which brings me to today’s Wordle, brought to you by Kirk Douglas. Ever heard the guy sing “A Whale of a Tale” in the 1954 adaptation of “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea”? Well, now you have. And if you’re anything like me, it’ll be rattling around in your head for a while.

Hence WHALE, which, to my surprise, yields three yellows. That’s about as good as it gets. Not many options from there, and ALLOW was the first to spring to mind. Then the winner comes into view: AGLOW.

WHALE, ALLOW, AGLOW — what a poetic progression. Five stars.

Today’s word is AGLOW, an adjective and an adverb. According to Webster’s New World College Dictionary, it means “in a glow” of either color or emotion.

Today’s word is moderately challenging because of its unusual letter pattern.

The answer can usually be found using elimination strategies within six guesses, but the letter pattern is uncommon.
