Trump says his passports were taken in Mar-a-Lago search

Former President Donald Trump claimed Monday that three of his passports were swiped last week in the FBI’s search of his Mar-a-Lago home in Palm Beach, Fla.

One of the passports was expired, Trump said.

“This is an assault on a political opponent at a level never seen before in our Country,” Trump said on Truth Social, a social media platform he launched after he was banished by Twitter.

The FBI declined to comment.

Americans who travel outside the country often can apply for second passports, according to the State Department.

Valentina Meehan, president of the Passport Plus, a New York-based passport and visa expediting service, said that it is common for people who travel extensively for business or government purposes to have multiple passports.

“For a former president, that would be normal,” she said.

Trump has spent the seven days since the search sniping at the FBI, which he accused in one post of carrying out a “sneak attack” on his Florida home.

The Washington Post, citing anonymous sources, reported last week that the FBI was seeking top-secret documents related to nuclear weapons.

That disclosure could suggest fear among government officials about the documents falling into the wrong hands.

Unsealed court records show that 11 sets of classified documents were seized during the Mar-a-Lago search.

Trump has claimed the search will boost Republicans’ chances in the November elections. “Republicans could win many additional seats,” he wrote on Truth Social on Monday, “because of the strong backlash over the raid at Mar-a-Lago.”

But FiveThirtyEight, a poll aggregator, has shown Democrats’ chances improving in both the House and Senate in recent days.

FiveThirtyEight gave Democrats a 61% chance of winning the Senate and a 21% chance of winning the House on Monday.
