U.S. debt default looms as Senate Republicans vow to obstruct vote

Democrats argue both sides should raise the debt limit together since it applies almost entirely to spending from before Biden was elected. Republicans say that while it is essential to raise the debt limit, they are not going to help Democrats do it. They want to force the other party to include it in Biden’s “Build Back Better” legislation, which Democrats are moving in an expedited budget reconciliation process that can’t be filibustered.
