October baseball in New York City is expected to generate at least $93 million in economic activity for the city, Mayor Adams, a Mets fan, announced Tuesday.
The sunny forecast, which comes from the city’s Economic Development Corporation, estimates that each Major League playoff home game will create more than $15 million in additional cash for the city’s economy.
Regrettably for Adams and other Mets’ fans though, the only team still able to significantly contribute to the city’s economy at this point are the Yankees, who play the Cleveland Guardians in the American League Division Series on Tuesday night.
It was probably for that reason that Hizzoner leaned on the Yanks to illustrate the city’s projected windfall.
“Playoff baseball is back in New York City, but it’s more than what happens on the baseball diamond. It brings about an economic stimulus for our city,” he said. “Our city is hitting a home run like Aaron Judge. We’re knocking it out the park.”
The Mets, who Adams has pulled for since childhood, were knocked out of the playoffs Sunday night by the San Diego Padres.
An analysis by the EDC determined that the Mets’ three postseason home games generated an economic impact of $16.9 million each. The Yanks are expected to bring in significantly more, with the EDC predicting the Bombers will generate $21.5 million per game.
Asked how he justifies continuing to root for the Mets, given these cold, hard fiscal facts, Adams chuckled.
“It’s the combined number that gives us the success. And so by making sure we support both teams, we are seeing the economic stimulus in Queens and the economic stimulus in the Bronx,” he said. “As I stated — two different jerseys, one team, Team New York. They both have that NY on their uniform.”
Adams also noted that his son is a Yankees fan.
But EDC President Andrew Kimball offered a different explanation — and defense — for remaining loyal to These Mets.
“The first round generates a slightly lower dollar than the divisional round, so if the Mets were in the divisional round, it would be the same thing — $21 million,” he said. “The further the Yankees go, the more money. So the $100 million that the mayor talked about is just based on the games we know will be played, not if the Yankees make it all the way through the World Series, which we expect they will.”
Last week, Adams predicted success for the Mets in the playoffs, prompting one reporter to ask if he’d be a better good luck charm for the Bronx Bombers.
“Yes, I am,” he said, laughing. “We gotta make sure one of us goes to the World Series, so I’m happy the Yankees are going to get there.”
As for the series with Cleveland, Adams predicted a sweep.
