The Vanderbilt is a Georgian-style home-turned-hotel that was completed in 1909. It is located in downtown Newport.

We started our tour in the hotel’s restaurant, where the building’s original hearth keeps guests cozy in the chillier months.

The cinematic Library’s cozy seating nooks set the tone for a relaxing conversation and classic cocktail.

The Vanderbilt completed a top-to-bottom renovation in 2022, leaving no detail overlooked, including the guest bathrooms.

The Snooker Room, named for the game that’s a British take on classic American pool, is a handsome space considered part of the hotel’s “social hub” approach.

Next, we visited the Conservatory, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and leads out to the peaceful garden terrace.

We felt that one of the most intriguing nooks in the hotel is the secret bar in the Doris Duke-inspired Parlor, where the hotel hosts “Green Hour,” an absinthe experience.

Millionaire sportsman Alfred Vanderbilt, whose parents owned The Breakers, commissioned the property. Legend says the edifice was to be for his mistress, but he ultimately donated it to the city.

Guests can linger in the Library with a loved one or curl up with a good book and a cocktail.

The stylish Parlour can host intimate events and experiences like The Vanderbilt’s signature cocktail punch bowls, a cocktail experience that’s a nod to the Gilded Age.

While on the hotel’s lowest level, we saw the pool, which is typically a peaceful, uncrowded space.

It’s hard to beat the view from The Vanderbilt’s beloved Roof Deck, where sunset casts its glow over boats bobbing in the harbor, and the lights along the Newport Pell Bridge glow brighter in the night sky.

Guest suites range from 400 to 2,000 square feet, and all feature sophisticated sitting areas and views of the private garden terrace or Newport Harbor.

Suites feature a modern-meets-masculine aesthetic, while vintage touches maintain a hint of Gilded Age glamour.

The Dining Room is strikingly handsome. The servers clad in simple white button-downs, dark denim jeans and chef’s aprons give the space a decidedly comfortable and approachable vibe.
