Sen. Bob Casey has prostate cancer, says prognosis is ‘excellent’

Sen. Bob Casey, a moderate Pennsylvania Democrat, said Thursday he was diagnosed with prostate cancer last month but expects to fully recover.

Casey, 62, said on Twitter that his doctors have given him an “excellent prognosis” and that he will undergo surgery in the coming months.

“I am confident that my recommended course of treatment will allow me to continue my service in the 118th Congress with minimal disruption, and I look forward to the work ahead,” the swing-state Democrat wrote.

Though the House has had a chaotic opening to the Congress, with Republican infighting preventing the election of a new speaker and the swearing-in of new members, the Senate was seated without drama this week.

Democrats control the Senate by a narrow 51-to-49 margin. The chamber is due to return to work Jan. 23.

Sen. Cory Booker, a New Jersey Democrat, said on Twitter that “his heart” was with Casey and the Pennsylvanian’s family.

“I pray for a successful and swift treatment and recovery.” Booker tweeted. “I know he’ll beat this!”

And Sen. John Fetterman, the newly elected Pennsylvania Democrat who suffered a stroke during his campaign last year, wished Casey well.

“He was there for me and I’ll be right there for him during this,” Fetterman tweeted. “You got this, Senator!”
